This is going to sound disgusting but it works.
In the 70's and 80's we had the "Green Revolution" and many of us went back to the roots of gardening.
One way, and I read this in a book, tried it and it worked...you gather as many of the harmful bugs you can.
Freeze them slightly so that the are cold and don't leave you when you dump the bag into an OLD blender.
Add 4 cups of water to your bugs and puree the creatures.
Pour in a spray bottle and spray your planets.
They future bugs will either leave it alone or it will make those who eat the plants die and keep everyone and everything around alive.

bluemoon,
there is a common chemical called Peremethrin. It is used in flea and tick shampoo. So it sould be safe. It is another contact poison. That would be relatively safe for them. Just have them inside while spraying and about an hour after so that it can dry.
Leafhoppers can fly, so the problen could come back. But at least during any kind if fruiting that you may have, you can use the stuff.
A reasonable amount of the powder-form Boric Acid poured in corners not only kills roaches and ants, but is safe for humans, and animals. Also, you can find it in any drugstore and it is very cheap--like 3 dollars or something.
Nematodes.
Usually the reason we have lots of grasshoppers is because our plants are dry. Try dousing the leaves of your plants good with water, the little buggers don't like getting wet!
