Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Gardening is a good book for this. Also Sunset's Western Landscape Book is excellent. Both these books are easy to read and have great pictures and descriptions of plants. A must for any gardener.

If you want results soon you will have to buy a large specimen, or even better, stay away from trees. I start counting a tree at about 15 feet.
