I just checked on-line, should I use open toped or close toped?

Closed Top: 30 gal. stores up to 445 lbs.; 55 gal., 800 lbs. of liquids and solids. 2" opening to pour and 3/4" opening to vent.

The numbers don't make sense. Same size (55 Gal) but vastly different capacity.
