We have a 10 yr. old crepe myrtle. This month it is dropping leaves after a wonderful blooming period.Help.?

We have a well established (10 yr. old) white crepe myrtle. It had a wonderful blooming season, but now (in Aug) it is dropping leaves as they turn yellow to red. It has not done this before and am trying to find out why. Is it too much or too little water or something else?

Answers:
It sounds like the tree is stressed due to drought and heat conditions. When a tree gets stressed it often drops leaves early to hoard nutrients. Try to give it one good watering every week to two weeks that are free of heavy rain. This can help offset some of the drought stress it may be expierencing. Be sure not to over water which can also stress the tree. Make sure the soil drys out in between waterings. It should come back just fine next spring. A local nursery or extension agent are excellent sources of info for these problems.
