How tall should I let my mums get before I start pinching them?
Answers:
"Many gardeners "pinch back" their garden mums to maintain a more compact form. To "pinch back" a plant simply means to prune it lightly. Everywhere you make a cut new growth will emerge, making the plant fuller. This procedure usually begins in spring when the plants are about 6 to 8 inches tall. Take a sharp pair of pruners and cut the entire plant back by about half. Repeat the process about 2 or 3 times over the course of the spring and into early summer. The rule of thumb is to make your last pinch by the 15th of July. Any later than this and you run the risk of delaying the plant's bloom too long, and you may lose your blooms to frost."

If you don't want it to bloom pinch them when they bud you know green little balls on end of stem. If you want some blooms then leave some on.
For me it is a question of the height the plant can support and this will depend on the size/age of your mum. If it is a younger mum you might want to go with 1 to just under 2ft. I have some mums that are over 8 years old now that can support about 2 1/2 or almost 3 feet without falling over and looking shabby. Although I trim them slightly to make them fuller. If you notice your mum blooms laying over or if they are not very full it is time to prune them a little just be careful and do not prune them too late in the season (after June or so). Having said this they are a fairly maintenance free plant.
did you know that if you take the piece you pinch off and put it in moist sandy dirt it will root and you will have a new plant in 7-10 days????? One year I "made" over 500 new mum plants! I use just plain sand because they must stay moist and the dirt must fit tightly against the stem but be soft enough for the new roots
I work at a country club, and i just let them grow...they are generally about 2-2 1/2 feet tall when they bloom, and about the same size around. However, they bloom in mid-august to very early september. If you want them to bloom later in the season, you should pinch them back occasionally. and you can just use a pair of hedge trimmers to trim them.
