how do you keep herons out of your pond?
Answers:
This happened to us as well, we witnessed one of our lovely big coi go head first down a heron's throat.
They say a plastic or pottery heron beside the pond deters them as they are teritorial and wont land if they see the other bird from above.
We have a net over the pond which stops cats and the heron, it doesn't spoil the look of it as its so fine, but it does stop unwanted guests.

Maybe your fish ran away from home?
Seriously ... try a motion sensor light.

Phased-array radar on the roof and a Vulcan Phalanx by the back door.or , more simply , buy 2 or 3 plastic herons and put them in the pond.
.22 should take care of that.
plastic ducks, seriously, if a heron thinks the pond is occupied by other birds, it won't visit
Get a gun!!
Plastic is the way to go.
and it works
well, herons are protected birds, i believe that they would eat 5 fish, however herons are not nocturnal, if the fish went missing at night i would suspect a different culprit, how shallow is the pond? how large? i suspect you may have a racoon problem rather than a cat or heron problem. a super way to keep racoons away (even from a trash can" is to soak a shop rag in ammonia, then hang it in thier path of approach, look for footprints, or for a trash can, hang it over the edge with the lid holding it diwn...hope this helps
could be raccoons for sure sir cats are not known to dive in but raccoons will dive in and grab them wicked creatures they are
I think herons are protected and can't be shot!! legally that is, try the net covering pond.
Get a plastic alligator that floats in your pond.
I'm also voting for raccoons because they are nocturnal.
