I bought thyme and basil seeds and want to plant them by the window, what soil do I use?
Answers:
Use a potting soil if you are going to put it in a pot... here is why...
Soil in the ground is very different from the soil you would use in a pot... it won't have good enough drainage... without making this too difficult to understand... do this...
Grab a sponge...soak it in water and hold it flat as if you were laying it on the counter or something... it holds water right? now hold it vertical over the sink and watch what happens... all the water flows out... its called a perched water table...
the ground is good at holding water... but let it stay in the ground... you need a potting soil because it has everything you need that is perfect for pots... water retention, drainage, and porosity (roots need air too and they won't get it with field soil)
Other answers:
standard potting soil should be fine. scooping up soil may mean scooping up teeny, tiny unwanted seeds that will choke out your herbs.

regular potting soil...or whatever has the least amount of nutrients. They need very little feeding when growing.
Use a good potting soil that you can get from any garden shop. Sometimes these are called soiless mixes , they will do a good job in a pot or a window box. Regular ground soil doesn't work so good in a pot, it gets hard and the plants don't grow very well.
