when and how do i prune a weeping cherry willow treein the shape of a mushroom?
Answers:
It's hard to explain without any illustrations but I'll try. You want to use what is called "directional pruning." When you trim off an unwanted branch (in your case, ones that the are not weeping downward) you don't leave a stub, you cut off the unwanted branch from right where it's coming out. If you leave a stub, it will put out shoots that will probably grow straight up. As far as the branches that do hang down, but put out side shoots, you trim them off the same way, by not leaving any stubs. You can prune it anytime of the year. I hope this helps.

Get "The Pruning Book" by Lee Reich. My mom, a nursery owner for 35 years, owns this book and gave it to all of us kids when we got our own houses. The book gives clear, correct instructions on how and when to prune trees into many different shapes. The instructions can be understood by a beginner and there are many color pictures illustrating the techniques. I've referred to this book many times while tending my own garden.
