Fall planting tips in Illinois?

Looking for some good ideas for low maintainace shrubs or may be flowers, preferrably low cost that can be planted in late august / early september in Northen Illinois.

Usually trees and shrubs are marked down at nurseries by September. You can get lots of cheap stuff.

Nursery would be a good place to ask about speices, too. Plus, most nursery stock is appropriate to the area.
