How do you "start" a plant with a plant clipping?

The plant lady at work gave me this really good start from a vine type plant. I think it's called a philla...something. I tried to tell her I've got a "black" thumb and I'm not good w/ plants but she said it's a very common house plant and anyone could grow it. I put the ends in water just like she said, but it's not sprouting roots like she said it would.

Answers:
try putting a little sugar in the water. Not a lot, just maybe a pinch. As long as the start is still green, it's still growing. Give it a few weeks. If it's not brittle and brown, it'll grow roots.

Other answers:
it takes time for the roots to start budding just keep it in the water till it does

Put the cutting in a jar full of water.....with the stem in the water. Place it in a window ledge where it will recieve good sunlight. It will start rooting....and will even grow in the water. Once there is a good root structure established you can transplant into potting soil.
