I would like to know how to process pecans once they have fallen off the tree. I've had this tree for about 11 years and it finally gave us the first pecans last fall / winter. When we tried to open them, the nut would stick to the shell and came out in tiny pieces. I wonder if there is a process, such as heating them or something, to make the nut come out in one piece. Some people told me to put them in the sun for several days before cracking them open, but it wasn't as effective as I thought it would be. Can anybody help? Thanks.

I think it has something to do with the type of tree you have. Pecans called "papershell" are very easy to crack and then come out in one piece. Other types will never come out in one piece.

Do a search for Texas pecan sheller or rocket nutcracker. Without the right tool you'll never get them out in one piece. I'd list a specific site but Yahoo get's funny about that.
