Gerberas are often attacked by gray mold, powdery mildew, anthracnose, bacterial blight, crown and root rot.
Leaf miners, mites, aphids, thrips, and whiteflies, are also common. They are the favorite food for slugs and snails, earwigs, and mealybugs.
They are tender, but can tolerate light frosts, if kept barely moist in winter.
If grown as a house plant, give it bright light and night temperature of 60F. Divide them between February and April. Leave one to two buds for each division. Be very careful with the roots. Try to disturb them as little as possible, even if root bound in a pot.
Keep the crown dry. It will rot easily if it is wet. Build a two sided moat around the plant, so that the water and soil will not wash onto the crown. Water deeply outside the moat, then let the soil become nearly dry before watering again. Keep the old leaves picked off to prevent disease, and spray and bait for insects.
