Very abrupt death may be due to:
-- gopher or voles eating the roots. Check one of the plants to see if it still has a root system.
-- herbicide or other chemical damage. Has an herbicide been applied in the area recently. Has someone spilled gasoline or some other toxic chemical nearby?
--severe weather conditions. Are the plants small or recently planted? Plants not yet well established are vulnerable to extremes of heat or cold, even if well cared for, because their root systems are smaller.
-- drainage. Are the plants getting too much or two little water? Always perform an "autopsy" to see why a plant has died so you have better results in the future. Are the roots mushy and rotted, or dried up? Is there a sour odor, also an indicator of rot?
