horsetail weed?

i have recently covered my front lawn with membrane and with chippings.horsetail is growing through in patches.I have tried all sorts of weedkiller.would pouring bleach onto it kill it off

Answers:
horse tail is unfortunately one of the most persistent weeds and once it is in your soil it is very difficult to get rid of.
it dates back some 60 million years and can produce roots that go 5 feet deep and there is a waxy coating on the leaves that stops weedkillers getting into the plants system.

try rubbing the leaves to remove some of the wax before spraying this is about all you can do other than being persistent

Other answers:
No, bleach will not do too much to this pest of a weed. All the books tell you to dig it out completely and try not to leave any bits of roots in, however, this seems to be virtually impossible task to do. The only success I have had is to crush the weed and then spray it with something like ''Roundup'', once it is crushed it absorbs the weedkiller more readily.
Make sure you do this in a dry spell and use a strong mixture, possibly spraying a couple of times.

Good luck.

Change the PH of the soil. If you make it a bit more acid the Mares tail will die out.
it is an absolute s_d to get rid of because the roots are oh so long you would not believe (Think tip of the iceberg) repeat doses of round -up ( glyphosate) should do it , you might have to paint it on with a paint brush, you can add a little washing up liquid to the spray to make it stick better. spraying it will kill the surrounding grass.
Nearly impossible to get rid of.
This plant is ancient and has evolved over millions of years to survive in our world today.
I've had some luck getting rid of it by using SBK Brushwood killer - although this is a dodgy product to use, so BEWARE.
Try to break the weeds outer waxy coating to expose the weed to give the SBK something to cling to and act on.
Good luck. You will have to persevere as the weed is REALLY stubborn, REALLY STUBBORN.
this weed is a nighmare hence the other name for it (Mares Tail)
roundup applied regularly will eventually kill it off but it will take time as for bleach thats a old wifes tale (no pun intended)

had this in a garden took months to clear a small area the roots of this grow to over 3 ft long so digging is not an option as even the smallest part missed will grow again
