Is it necessary to strip previous finish on deck when staining?

I'm trying to stain my deck for the summer in a capuccino color. I've washed the deck of all the mould and other dirt using a special purpose cleaner. Behr recommends I use a stripping agent to remove the previous finish on the deck. Is this necessary since I will be using a dark semi-transparent stain? Will it affect the finish/durability of the new stain?

Answers:
If the old stain is pretty well faded and the new color is a darker shade than the old I wouldn't strip it.

I stained my deck approx. 2 weeks ago and I didn't strip the old stain first. It turned out great.
