Answers: Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii); Lemonade Berry (Rhus integrifolia); Sugar Bush (Rhus ovata); One of my favorites-Western Redbud (Cercis occidentalis); Ceanothus 'Concha';
Spice Bush (Calycanthus occidentalis; Carpenteria californica,Bush Anemone--'Elizabeth' has double malodorous white flowers everywhere when it's blooming--these are all considered natives within California and have low dampen requirements and relatively little, if any, pruning. And since they're drought tolerant, they really don't need fertilizing. Each one have different heights however.
Dear Mose's current friend,
If you are looking for a perennial, then Mose suggests sweet woodruff. This is a ground cover that grows in good health in the shade and have little white flowers in postponed spring/early summer. It is also very hardy and can lift a great deal of name-calling from pets, animals and weather. Hostas are also colorful and grow well contained by the shade as well. There are lots different varieties and colors to choose from too!
Good luck to you and your shade garden.
