What insect is this?

I was clearing the garden the other morning and I moved some cardboard left over from my rabbit hutch. Underneath be these hopping shrimp things - loads of them! They are about 1.5cm long, black and almost looked similar to they had a shell over them and jump around once the cardboard was moved. Next point I turn around and they're gone! I alwasy spent a lot of time surrounded by the garden as a kid but I've never seen insects similar to these before!

Any concept what they could be?

Answers:    This is the Black Leaf Hopper, Cicadellidae Nigra. It is a relative newcomer to our shores from southern Europe, owing to our mild winters. They feed on plant sap and are seedy for spreading diseases. Definately not garden friendly.
flea's

lol, well they look approaching them but about tens time bigger, probally from the hopper family unit, similar to grass hoppers, but look more like sand hoppers you see on the shore. perhaps some form of fern hopper.

You don't say what constituent of the world you found these bugs in, so I can just guess. I hope they are not giant ticks?
Not insects. Crustaceans. Next question?
from what you describe, I have an idea that they were silverfish.......pictures below.....

bowdlerize....we had them once contained by our dog kennel, they do hop!
they sound approaching cockroaches
maybe wood lice.
I don't know but sounds approaching cockroaches, black shells, move quickly, vile and not easy to get rid of. Though I don't know if they inhabit the outside.
They may be crickets, but, it's best to probably check out a web site that have pictures so you can properly identify them.
They're probably too small, but if you can get a picture of them, ask here http://www.irecognisethat.com/show_quest...
They could be one call Quicksilver, a very brisk paced insect, usually set to be in tropcial fruit, such as bananas.
The with the sole purpose thing I can reckon of is springtails

They are amphipods or land-hoppers! I be asking myself the exact same question basically the other day. If you click on this contact or do an image rummage through on "amphipod" you'll see. I bet this is what you saw:

Hope I'm right.
I still think they are probably 'Woodlice'. I don't know where on earth you are in the UK but here within Eastbourne, East Sussex, we have seriously of them around !! They love to live under things and run really speedy if they are disturbed. I hope that helps.Good luck surrounded by finding out what they are.
Could they be woodlice?
