Thinking about putting red lava rocks down for landscaping, any comments or suggestions??

We have a thin layer of straw down now and were going to put the red lava rock on top????

Answers:
As a landscaper, I'm not thrilled w/lava rocks. They generate a lot of heat in the summer which can kill your plants. Also, they don't provide a layer in the winter to keep roots from freezing. You should go with cypress mulch.

don't do it, once down you will have rocks in your garden for ever, there are many options that are MUCH better than using ROCKS :-)
good luck

Make sure they match your trim or the roof of your house
What works better than straw is newspaper. Get about 4 pages thick, wet it, great grass barrier. You then just put the rock on top of the newspaper. What looks even sharper than just red lava rock is a mixture of red and another color, for example red and black. It sets off the color of the plants and is more eye catching than just red.
we used red mulch it has worked great!
before you do this i would put down a weed barrier...preferably a DeWitt weed barrier No.5....this will help the weeds or grass from coming through the rocks....i wouldnt have put down the straw though...and as time goes by...buy a little bottle of weed killer and catch the weeds or grass that do come through the rocks before they have chance to spread.....remember the wind does blow weed and grass seed through the air...and may settle down in the rocks....good luck....
