Rubber mulch
If you didn't use mulch, you could use lava rocks. If you don't know what that looks like, its really just small red rocks.

CEDAR DOES NOT REPEL BUGS!! It will repel moths and ticks. That's it! It won't keep termites away, it won't keep ants away, etc. The industry standard for a product to be pure is 51%. So if you purchase a pure cedar mulch it is about 52% cedar and the rest is pine, spruce, hemlock etc. Note cedar mulch is a dusty tan color. It isn't supposed to be orange red!
Most bark products are mostly cedar now anyway because it is the cheapest of all the barks. The only difference is the hue of colorant used to get the finished product.
That being said bark mulch isn't the same everywhere. I'm sure most people have now heard of the chain stores like home depot and Lowe's having mulch made from the downed trees and demolition debris from hurricane Katrina. This is becoming an all to common practice in bark mulch. Depending on where you buy it from, it may have "demo wood" in it. This is a big problem because this rotting wood can and will attract carpenter ants and termites.
Bottom line is: 1) you get what you pay for so be careful of where you buy your mulch, 2) Choose your mulch based on the texture and color you want. Good mulch doesn't attract or repel most insects!
