how do I take care of a bamboo plant that is potted. I don't know what kind it is exactly?
Answers:
Like african violets, bamboo prefers pebbles or rocks instead of soil. Keep at least 3/4 full of water and avoid direct sunlight. If any stalks turn yellow, remove them immediately so the others will not be effected. When the stalks grow larger, transplant them to a larger container. Good luck!
Other answers:
water heavy. Keep out of full and half sunlight until it is a larger plant. use a liquid fertilizer at least once a month.

water, they are so invasive that anything else may be counterproductive
Bamboo isn't very fussy. It is happy with water once a week and a very dilute fertilizer every three months. I use Miracle Gro 1 teaspoon per quart of water every three months.
I can certainly help you with this one. I purchased a house and it had on one side 6' tall bamboo so thick that you could not even walk through them. That was 11 years ago and I still have shoots growing each year. One year I put some bamboo in a large pot. Nothing special in the dirt. The dirt was hard like cement and it still grows. My wife just told me that she changed the dirt this year for the first time since we planted it 3 years ago. Now it just grows each year and very thick. This is a very invasive plant. I do nothing to it except add water when I feel like it or if it looks real dry. And I mean real dry. In the winter I put the pot under my deck just like I do with hosta. Basically put it into the pot and do nothing but water it. By the way I strong suggest that should you plant this plant outside the pot contain the bamboo as it spreads underground and you will be sorry
