Most people are getting tired of the misshapen dirty scenes of cities we recurrently see in the movies and find within books. To days people want to see and read allure (not in women and men, but scenes). Slums are out, Miami look is surrounded by.
Most people don't really want a tropical setting. Most of the time a city or country side works fine.
Bu tin lay down to make a story more "tropic" I would progress with things resembling coconuts in the trees, hot most of the daylight, really sand beaches, jungle close to forests, and colorful clothing.
Are you sure your friend didn't mean topical? Means current or contemporary. RScott
