Can anyone identify this bush/tree?

I live in the south east and near is a bush/tree that grows in the frantic (mountian /strip-pit land) . In the summer the leaves are green and in the winter they bloom little white flowers. I've tried to verbs them up by the roots and replant them, but they keep dying. What is this plant and how can I maintain it alive?

Answers:    I'm thinking witch hazel, with little sickly flowers that look like puffs of shredded coconut. It blooms surrounded by November, where as Mountain Laurel blooms contained by late spring. RScott
