I understand that by cutting back an astilbe you can produce bigger blooms. How and when to do this?

Answers:
Some plants you want to cut back (almost to the ground) in the fall and some in the spring. I have Astilbe and I cut it back in the fall after the first frost. It comes back every year bigger than the the year before. But, I really don't think it matters too much when you do it. Some people just let their plants alone and do nothing. I just find very good results from cutting back in the spring. They do better for me. I live in Michigan and I am sure our cold weather has something to do with it. I always figured I would leave the old on to protect them thru the cold months.
