I have several hostas and they have this long things growing out the top. Can I cut them??

Someone told me if I cut these long things that my hostas will not come back next year. They are about 4 years old. I really want to cut these things, they do not look very nice. So, can I cut them or is it true that it will kill my hostas???

Answers:
I have Hosta all over my yard and love it, but I don't like that flower that comes up in the middle. I have always just cut them out and some of my plants are at least 20 years old.

Other answers:
those long things are the flowers. Let the hosta flower and, when the flower dies, then you cut the stalk back.

that is the bloom stalk, cut them out if your wish to do so
do you mean the steam for the flowers? As i have understood it, with any plant, if its brown and dead, you can cut it off. Pruning is supposed to encourage growth, perhaps not with hostas, I'm not really sure there. Anyhow, i hope it helps some.
Some people cut them off because they simply don't like the flowers sticking up out them on those long stems. It doesn't hurt them. Actually, if you cut them off, more nutrients go to the plant itself. Some years I cut them off and some years I don't bother. It will not kill the hosta and it will not prevent them coming back.
The bloomscape growing out of the center of your hosta will make beautiful, edible flowers. Many of these are fragrant as well. Seeds will often form on bloomscapes too--most varieties of hosta have viable seeds that you can share with friends.

Some people do choose to cut the bloomscapes off as the plant stays nicer-looking for a longer period of time that season.

It will not hurt your plants to cut the scapes off.
It won't harm your Hostas at all to cut them down. It is the bloom stalk. Some people like them and some don't. if you don't like the blooms cut them off. it won't make any difference what you do.Either way is fine
