Can I add ashes from the fireplace to my compost pile?

If so is there something specific I should add after it?

Answers:
I'm no compost expert, but I add the ashes from my fireplace to the pile every time I clean out the fireplace. I also add the ashes from my grill. I believe that it's safe as long as you didn't burn wood (or charcoal) that contained chemicals (like treated lumber). If everything burned completely, all that should be left is carbon, and carbon is great for soil.
