what is the best plant to grow next to a birch tree 2which is in a container?

Answers:
Is the birch in a container? Or do you want companion plants that you can keep in containers near the birch?

If the birch is in a container, you'd do well to get it into the ground as it grows into a huge tree, and will not thrive in a pot. But if it is the companion plants you want in pots (due to the shallow nature of the birch roots), then try these:
Daylilies, ornamental grasses,
hollies, ferns, lily of the valley, irises (under a small
birch - bearded iris) burning bush, and japanese yew; Hostas look awesome under birch; also, how about a rather long bed under it edged in field stone and red wood mulch? Plant with hosta and rubeckia, a burning bush shrub, red celosia and yellow strawflowers, with red and white impatiens. Daffodils, gladiolas, dahlias, shasta daisies, threadleaf coreopsis, peonies are all nice choices, and should do well.
