I know it might be a stupid question. I want to start mixing together my own potting soil and someone told me I can either use coarse builder's sand or loam.
Answers:
Loam is a slightly confused concept. Loam in definition is "good dirt". Generally it is equal proportions of clay, sand, and silt, and humus content is adequate. Frequently you will see "use sandy loam" on planting instructions, that means the proportion of sand is higher.
Hope this helps some.

Loam is soil composed of a relatively even mixture of three mineral particle size groups: sand, silt, and clay. Loams are gritty, plastic when moist, and retain water easily.
