why is my tree losing its leaves during summer?

Sounds like its not getting enough water.

its obviously telling you something... it doesn't like the way its being treated... or its diseased... and or both... if your watering it... it might have been too often... if not.. then that could be why...

This isn't an ash tree is it? The emerald ash borer has a lot to answer for in the Midwest for killing trees. Cutting down the tree is the only cure and will help prevent the spread of these insects.
Soil Ph may not be correct
we had a very large oak tree that did the same thing in early august. Gradually all the leaves fell. What we found out the next spring when it didn't sprout again, that it had been hit by lightning above eye view! Unfortunately, all we could do was cut it down. Hope yours is a simple case of too much or too little water!! And if you have a local county agent, you can call him and he can give you helpful information for your area.
