I had two tomaties on a vine, and my daughter stuck a clove of garlic on the end for artistic affect. I kept not getting round to using them, and they didn't go soft, they kept looking jealthy while loads of shoots started to grow inside them. Eventually they were just a load of shoots. were they feeding off the garlic?
Answers:
No. But the garlic will grow and sprout off the tomatoes. You can keep garlic under the sink or in a bin and if you don`t use it. It can multiple new sprouts just like potatoes sprout when they get old.
Other answers:
The shoots are part of the garlic clove, not the tomato.
Garlic cloves can sprout and form shoots in your sock drawer - they don't need anything to get started.
