To much water at one time. Watering tomatoes should be done every other day, and water the same length of time, especially if it's been dry and hot.
Q: What would cause a green and young tomato about the size of your little finger to split on the bottom? (e-mail reference)

A: A sudden surge of moisture after an extended period without.
Tomatoes split because the weather is too dry and if you get a lot of rain suddenly, the plants uptake too much water and the fruit swells too fast, splitting them.
your tomatoes will split if you only water them occasionally, we water ours 4 times a day if its very hot( but not to much)little and often, good luck
uneven watering patterns. water them at regular intervals.
Yeah, over watering. I know, it's already been said, but hey 2 points is 2 points.
