How can I tell if a shrub or a small 4 foot Pom Pom tree is getting either too much or too little water?.?

I have some spots that are 4 to 6 inces of area that are turning brown. Do I trim it off, or leave it alone? Is this caused by too much or too little water? Plz help!

Answers:
If the ground is not dry to the touch, you are o.k.
The areas turning brown this time of year may be Japanese beatles (June bugs) that feed on roots in their larva stage.

You can use insecticide on them in hot weather but they have done the damage by now. Poison them in the fall while it is still warm.

A quick fix is to add about 4 inches of soil and replant the grass around the plant.
