Quality soil, easy to care for plants and some kind of fertilizer, and inform yourself on what you are growing...you need to know how to care for it best.
Upwards is considered best.
You will need good soil, plenty of water and 5 to 6 hours of sunlight in the spot you pick.
Start by finding out what part of the year (spring, fall etc.) that you should plant the vegetables or flowers that you want. Then start preping the place that you want to plant. Remove all undesired vegetation and till the area thoroughly. Incorporate the fertilizer while you are tilling the soil. It's easier than adding later. Make mounds or rows to plant what ever you are planting. Space the plants for growth. If planting vine-like plants, put a bamboo stake or similar apparatus next to the plant for the vines to grow on. Constant watering is necessary - but don't over water. Natural rainfall is better than household water. Take care of the garden by hoeing and pulling weeds as they occur. After a few weeks, you may need to re-fertilize. Be carefull, don't over-fertilize because this will "burn" your plants. Gardening is fun and you will enjoy eating or looking at what YOU have grown - so enjoy! I hope these little tid-bits helped.
