A Question about Landscaping Fabric?
Answers:
Landscape fabric goes on top of the soil unless it is used in french draining jobs. Then it is placed over the gravel before you back fill in with soil. As for regular landscaping you put it on top with decorative mulch over that. Usually 3" of mulch so that weeds can't take hold. Mind you it will slow the weed process down, not stop it for seeds blown on to the mulch can still germinate but will be easily pulled out. Landscape fabric is also used to put down patios and walk ways again to prevent weeds from coming up in between cracks. Happy landscaping.

I installed some a year ago and the instructions said to put it on top of the soil, with mulch 2" or so deep on top of the fabric. More specifically, it said to sweep as much stray dirt off before layering the mulch because any soil left on the fabric and under the mulch would allow weeds to sprout and kind of defeat the purpose of the fabric.

Hi, the landscaping fabric goes about 2-4 inches below the soil. If you are amending the soil by adding green sand, nutrients, etc. Do this first, than leave some of the mix out. Put the fabric down and cover with the remaining soil, add plants, mulch, and water as normal.
Landscaping fabic! Forget it. In years to come you will regret the day you put that stuff down.
I am a landscaper and I can tell some stories about that stuff. Weeds will grow through it. Its impossible to weed when that starts to happen. Its hard to plant in it after its down. I have spent many many hours geting that stuff out of peoples gardens. And its a job. Go with just mulch you'll be glad you did. Honestly!
are you aware that News-Papers will do the same thing.....dirt goes about 6 inches above it..you can all so use it in containers, flower pots........
If you decide to use the landscape fabric, also use
miracle grow weed preventer, because by itself it will not last long. I did mine with both and have no weeds not even that invasive grass thats thin and annoying and double the fabric.
On top of the soil, under the mulch! It doesn't work well. Spray with round up 3 to 4 weeks before digging !
