The rule is.... NEVER use mulch from any form of fruit tree unless you are personal involved with said fruit tree. To many questionable diseases and pathogens related to fruit trees that can cause problems with other plants in your garden. Why did the owner get rid of that fruit ? if you don't know, don't use it. If it was from your own, healthy fruit trees you chopped to mulch, then go ahead and use it.

Be careful with tree mulch - especially that provided by city parks dept. Trees often have insects living in them, when they are turned into mulch, the insects survive and you will transport those bugs into your lawn.
Even bagged mulch you purchase can result in this. A big problem has resulted from the Hurricane Katrina trees which were shredded and then sold as mulch - an insect was imported into our state that is causing problems.
garden dok is right. i read that fruit tree chippings / mulch is often made when someone gets rid of a sick or dying fruit tree.
