first is this patio for personal use only or drive? either way you should dig down about 6". you will be layering products. I am assuming your stone is 2" thick. if so you will be laying 2" of granular A gravel, 2" of playground sand, tamp it so its flat and level and finally lay your stone. when laying your stone its a good idea to have a 2x4 with you to lay ontop of the layed stone to see if they are level. if they are out some, use a mallet and gently hit the 2x4 to fix. after all is layed you will want to put sand over the stone to fill in all the gaps use a sand called magic sand. when it dries it is very hard. Oh ya if you are going along your grass or walkway, dont forget to use brick holds, if you go to your local Home Depot they will walk you through this and get you all you need.

I did one myself last month. I was advised to use CR-6 stone for the base, 2" tamped down, with an additional 2" also tamped. If you lightly spray the stone it will compact better. cover the stone after tamping with a good quality weed block material, and layer 2" of the sand, tamp, and level, followed by laying the pavers.
