I have moss on my Grassy Lawn -- what does that mean?

I have some kind of green moss growing on some areas of my grassy lawn. It seems to be in areas where my lawn isnt as green or is a bit thinning. What does this mean about my lawn? Do i need aeration or fertilizer or something?

Answers:
Moss generally results on a portion of the lawn which is either receiving an insufficient amount of sunlight or is ladened with excessive moisture. There are chemicals which can kill the moss but it will reoccur after a period of time unless you take steps to eliminate the problem. If the area is shaded, there are grass seeds available specific for shaded areas. If dampness is a problem you need to improve the drainage of the soil.
