What is the mix for a hummingbird feeder?
Answers:
I agree with all of the posts that recommend 1 part sugar, 4 parts water. Too much sugar in the water is very bad for the hummers. One thing I would add, that no one else has posted is that it's important to clean the feeders when you change the solution. I use a mild bleach water and clean out the holes as they get a black mildew around them in the summer. Sugar water will ferment and that's bad. So please keep your feeders clean or you can make those little hummers sick. Also rinse the bottles with plenty of clean water after washing them, before adding fresh sugar solution.

Four parts water to one part sugar, no need to add the red food coloring, the feeders attract them

4 parts water...1 part sugar. no food coloring needed.
bring mixture to boil, stir til all sugar has disolved. cool completely. store left over in fridge. best if hummingbird feeder is in shade. sun tends to make food go rancid. you would just have to change it more often.
Use one part sugar to four parts of water. Don't bother with red food coloring. They don't need it and you don't know if it causes any harm.
It is equal parts sugar and water (IE 1 cup sugar,1 cup water).
Heat water to dissolve sugar. Let cool and add to feeder. It is good to add red food coloring to attract the hummingbirds.
There are also red colored hummingbird feeders.
2 parts water, 1 part sugar
Bring to boil, cool, no red dye it's not good for us humans and it's not good for the birds.
4 parts water
1 part sugar
You don't need to boil it, just make sure it disolves.
I always use 1 to 1, but I don't think it matters. Hummingbirds just need sugar to survive, so as long as the water is sweet they enjoy it. I would add a little food coloring if your feeder is clear that way you are sure that they see it.
Recipe for Making your own Hummingbird food:
4 parts water / 1 part sugar
Bring water to a boil and stir in sugar. Boil for 2-3 minutes. Let cool. Excess nectar / hummingbird food can be stored in a tightly covered jar in refrigerator for one week.
Do NOT substitute honey for sugar!!
t is really not necessary to use red colored dyes and nectars. When making your own hummingbird food it is best to stick to 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. This will come close to the glucose concentration found in flowers.
I hope this helps you out.
I hope this helps you
8c. water 2 cup sugar. Boil, let cool. As long as your hummingbird feeders are red there is no need to add food coloring to your sugar water
I agree with the other posts, except as follows: I do mix 4 water to 1 sugar, in summer, but do 2 water to 1 sugar in winter for hummers that overwinter. They prefer the natural flower nectar in summer, but in winter, when natural sources are scarce or nonexistent, they need the extra energy to survive.
I personally believe that summer feeding should be a supplement, thus the weak solution, whereas winter feeding is total sustenance, and therefore needs to be a stronger concentration.
Of course the foregoing depends on your location and which seasons you have. I have all four seasons here, and winter means winter---barren, cold, snow etc.
As to food coloring for the solution, I notice my Anna's hummers prefer the color, even though the feeders themselves are colored.
sugar and water you can add it if you want but it won't help.
