I am wanting to sow Aspargus seeds in zone 8. I know they like cold weather, Can I sow them now in the shade?
Answers:
Forget asparagus seed---first it won't grow where you are and second you will not live long enough to see a piece of it from a seed. It grows from a huge root with a center blob and roots like your middle finger---even after you buy and plant it will take 2 or more years to get a piece of asp,. bigger than a straw. It is not just heat it is also humidity. I live in the West now and it grows everywhere, no way in the south east---shade, ho ho ho.

Are you referring to the fern or the veggie? Included links to both.

I think you have part of the answer-- but asparagus takes years to bear. If you plant seeds-- you need to let them grow enough to then move them where you want them. Asparagus grows in Oklahoma-- most of which is zone 7. Go to the Library and scan for a book-- Readers Digest has a good one-- the old Mother Earth News had one-- If you prefer on line-- go to the US Govt-- your state probably has a "A&M" college-- with it's gardner helps--
One more thing-- planting anything that needs lots of compost/feeding under trees defeats the purpose-- the tree will take all that nutrition and get really pretty-- but your asparagus won't. By the way, Henry Field company in Iowa sells asparagus sets.
Have fun...
