How do you repair a crack within a tree trunk?

I have hear of adding a cable to support the sides, but will the tree grow final together?

Answers:    You can't repair the crack.
The best you can do is support it so it doesn't get worse.
it wont grow vertebrae together... you could band the tree to give a hand support it... also if you tar the crack to hold out water and rime which will aggravate it, that might help

Severe remedial pruning. Complete amputation of one side or the other near the remaining half getting a moral pruning or give both sides a severe pruning bordering on the criminal, the pom-pom pollarding look. And do not use any coatings on the cuts or the crack!! RScott
You don't. You phone an arborist who will tell you if it is even possible!
