If I add sand and perlite to my cactus mix will there be enough organic matter for a jade plant?
Answers:
Any packaged potted mix will vary from bag to bag on organic material. Check the contents info. Neither sand nor perlite are organic materials but the perlite will open up the soil & help the soil to hold water.
When you say the soil is anhydrous & it won't absorb water, it sounds like a poor quality soil but I can't be for sure without seeing it.
One common trick to moisten potting soil is to place a few drops of liquid dish soap (Ivory is good) in your watering can & fill up with water. Now water the soil with the soapy water. The soap will help the dry soil soak up the water.
Any good, porous soil mix should work for a jade plant. I would not use sand however as it tends to cake up in a pot.
Other answers:
keep the jade plant damp and it will rot, period
cactus and succulents thrive on a poor potting mix
say 1/2 potting soil and 1/2 sand, when you water
it should run straight through the pot, do not let
any water stand in saucer, only water your plant
when it is dry 1-2 in below surface
