how do I make my apple trees stop producing fruit?

I have a few varieties of apple trees and was going to cut them down because I don't want fruit producing trees but love the shade. Is there any way I can do this without cutting them down?

Answers:
Hard pruning will minimize fruit production by limiting the number of branches with fruit spurs on them. You should still have some shade to enjoy but pruning costs money unless you are willing to get up there with your saw and pruners and do it yourself. Don't feed the trees. If you never give the trees any organic material or trace elements including lime the trees will not produce as well. If you never prune, the trees will grow large and crowded producing smaller and smaller fruit that can be tasteless, mealy, and really only good for the critters, birds and insects. And you will have plenty of shade but an unsightly tree with lots of dead , tangled, and crowded branches creating low grade fruit trees. Too bad you can't give the fruit away or have someone come and clean it up as it falls. We have three large transparent trees here in our yard and each September the ground is littered with heaps of fallen apples. The goats eat some, as do the whitetail deer and the black bears that roam from orchard to orchard. What's left goes to the birds , the wasps and the other lesser beings. I try to give as much of the fruit away as possible to friends and neighbours but every year wheel barrow loads are gathered up and dumped along the fence line. The extreme method of reducing fruit production is to prune at ground level and plant something else.
