this is a complicated answer.
Nitrogen (the first # on the fert bag) is what gives growth and green. you dont neccessarily need a High N product, but A good source of N. The reason we fertilize is to replace the N every 6-8 weeks. That is the nutrient grass uses the most. Use a high quality Slow release N product.
Also Water is essential. In most areas an inch a week is required. Rule Of thumb: A less frequent deeper watering is best. water heavier, but less often. The folks that are watering daily for 15 minutes a zone, are not doing the lawn any justice. The would be better off twice a week, an hour a zone.
Cut the lawn a bit higher(most grasses) instead of shorter.
It will provide a bit more shade for the roots, and wont tend to burn when stressed by improper mowing.
Iron ( FE) is a trick to green a lawn fast without the extra growth. You can buy Fertilizers with iron in them, or purchase granular or liquid iron as a supplement.
It has the most benefit in the warmer months when grass slows down. In spring/fall a healthy green lawn will be naturally green and iron isnt really required.
Some grasses are naturally greener than some. Find some better varieties and overseed them into the lawn.
You can simply aerate(highly recommended) And broadcast seed over the entire lawn. Aerate in the fall for most grasses. the roots will love you and your lawn will be hardier for it.
Also i highly recommend a PH test from a reliable extension service or testing lab. Those home ph testers are not very good. If your lawn is acidic or alkaline, you will want to add the required amount of lime or sulfur to adjust. In general (depends on soil type and structure) 6.8 is best. If your ph is low, the grass doesnt take up the fertilizer you put down optimily. You pay for a bag of fertilizer but only get half the benifit. Your wasting dollars and effort.
