I have a tree called a snow crab in my front yard. Weed-like "shoots" are growing excessively around the base of the tree and around it in large, tight clumps. They are even coming up through the grass. I think they are roots with growth surfacing. I dont know how to get rid of them without killing the tree. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd get rid of it but otherwise you'd probably have to dig a trench and cut roots and put a girdle of plastic or some sort of other material around it a few feet deep. plastic and a heavy mulch might keep down the shoots within the ring. I've never heard of this tree, but glad I don't have one!
