A question about Clematis.?

Will clematis survive over the winter if they are in a pot (in Pennsylvania)?

I moved and dug the plants up and put them in pots to take with me. They are growing like crazy but I dont have anywhere to plant them in the ground. Will they last outside and come back next winter if they are not in the ground? If so, is there anything special I need to do with them to make sure they are ok?

Answers:
if you dont have a garage or basement try the crawl space under your house if you have one..that is where i stored my canna's over the winter and when we got them out a couple of weeks ago they were starting to sprout..i live in kentucky..zone 6...also if you have a house with a cool room all winter you can store bulbs and such there also...i do that all the time because i hate sleeping in a warm room so our master bath off our bedroom serves as bulb storage..lol

hope this helps

I would think if the pots are in a garage or basement, they will probably be OK. The problem with leaving them outdoors in a pot is that their roots can get much colder in the pot since they are above ground level and they might freeze. If you must leave the pots outside, insulte them somehow. Maybe set them in one of those foam ice chests, wrap them in old blankets, layers of newspaper or even bubble wrap can insulate somewhat. I understand that there may not be room for actually planting the vines but is there somewhere you can sink the pots in the ground with the vines in them over winter? That would help.
