What could cause the soil in my yard to crack and appear as though something is running underneath it?

I recently cleaned out an old flower bed in my yard and every day there is a path in the soil that is raised and cracked. I usually stomp it back flat, but it always comes back. I am confused!

gopher?
theyre moles digging, it is a long row maybe 1 to 2 inches high 4 to 6 wide the dirt cracks open all thge way down. the ground is very soft to walk on in that area. it is moles.
Either it is moles or check for some running root underneath. Finally, check for Aliens.
Sounds to me like a mole or gopher. There are many ways to get rid of them depending on your preference. Ask at the nursery.

Good luck.
Probably a chipmunk, squirrel, rabbit, or something like that, depending where you live.
This is usually an indication that the soil is drying out, and contracting, so it pulls away from itself, causing cracks, in some places.

This is what causes foundations to crack, and results in your house shifting, as well. If unchecked, and untreated, you could be in for some major repairs.

I hope you can correct the problem, possibly by watering the area regurlarly, or increasing the amount of water you are already putting down.

Good luck,
