where do i find a sprinkler or irrigation system for a 6x20' outdoor terrace in new york city?

Wow. Good question. We are talking 120 sq feet here. What I would suggest for a 120 sq feet is drip irrigation. Look if you put in a irrigation system, yes you can do it yourself, and it is relatively easy to design one especially for a tererace but most code ordinances will have you have a licensed certified plumber put in a back flow preventer by your water meter. Being born and raised in NY...I know that could be costly. Without knowing what you have on your terrace and the type of soil, I cant determine the (gph) gallons per hour) but I feel pretty safe is saying for 120 sq feet, you can hook up a drip irrigation system. The great thing about these systems is that you can buy one in a complete kit at Home Depot or Lowes (Home Depot has them online) AND you can run it from a water faucet vs a irrigation system which is tied into your main line -check with your code enforcement office first and tell them what you have in mind. They will tell you if you are required (abou 99% sure you will) to have a backflow preventor on a drip irrigation system. You can buy a backflow preventor at the store or online and it will screw right onto the faucet. They are a lot cheaper for a drip irrigation system. For a drip irrigation system you will also need a pressure regulator - because believe it or not - the water pressure from your faucet will usually be to MUCH for a system. This will be inexpensive as well. I have actually gone to college to design systems and if you want to get more technical you could contact your county extension office, do a soil sample test, have them perofrm the test, and based on the results of the soil, and what you are growing, ornamentals, shrubs, turf, etc, you could calculate the amount of water your "plants" so you know for how long to run the system. Running your system frequently - depending on what you are growing can be a bad thing. For instance on most soils and most warm season turf, watering should take place approximately 45 minutes, twice a week. I hope this helps.
