Poppies, most importantly, must "stratify" or be in frost temperatures for at least 3 months to grow properly. You can accomplish this my putting them in the coldest part of your fridge (in the dark is important too) or a warmer part of the freezer.The soil and tempurature after that are somewhat relative to what strain of opium poppy you have, some are climatized to warmer weather, others need coolness at night to get a good propegation rate. If you don't know where the poppy seeds came from, try planting a few differnet batches, one in full sun in early spring (depending on your climate, snow must be melted) and in partial shade to full sun in late spring-early summer. They do not grow well in pots. All varities like well drained but moist soil, and although I have been told they like rich soil, I have witnessed them do great in poor rocky soil. Hope that helps a little.
Tripple the fertilizer,watering very little.1 day after fertilizing,mix one half cup vinegar,one half cup water,spray plant and pour rest around base of plant.The plant will develope a beautiful color and grow at twice the rate,repeat process in about two weeks.
