how do you keep the water fresh in a birdbath?

I just got a new birdbath/fountain and dont want it to get all slimy or limed up. what should I do to keep it fresh and safe for the birds.

Answers:
Keep it clean, and don't set in direct sun lite as this promotes the growth of the green slime, I clean mine every other day or so with one of the dobie scrubbing sponges, be careful not to use harsh chemicals and rinse well after scrubbing.

Other answers:
Clean it out once a week and it will stay pleasant.
If it gets all slimy and messed up the birds won't mind they drank out of puddles and old tin cans before your birdbath was there !!

Change it often. If you start to get buildup, use a benign cleaner and scrub, and rinse well, and then rinse again.
