577 square feet divided by 81 = 7.1234 yards
the 81 is derived from a calculation shown below in the link.

Other answers:
first turn your square ft of soil into cubic feet so its easy to work with. 4" deep divided by 12" per foot = 3

now divide your cubic foot total by 3 = 192
so you have 192 cubic ft of soil.

there ar 27 cubic feet in a yard so 192 / 27 = 7.1 yards.

OK...have I lost it??? I just answered this question in another catagory. I can't believe we all keep coming up with different answers. Here's mine...again...

Youre looking for cubic measurement, not square measurement. Let's say your plot is 10' x 57'6" (57.5') and you want to go down 4" (.3'). Cubic dimensions are determined by multiplying length x width x depth; in this case, 10'x57.5'x.3'=172.5 cubic feet. To convert that to cubic yards, divide by 27 (there are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard)=6.4 cubic yards.

Will somebody please confirm one of these answers as correct! I think I'm losing my mind! I used 57'6" as a close proximity to get his 577 sq ft.
area=577sq feet.577x 4/12 {inches to feet]= 192 cu feet.1 cu ft is1/27 cu yd..3ftx3ftx3ft=1cuyd..s... 192/27 is yr answer.can you handle it.got a wheel barrow...if it holds 4 cu ft of material..how many trips?
ps...i'd rent a sod cutter.you can set them close to that depth..or do 2 passes at 2' deep..and the blocks of grass are easier to handle.have fun cheers
21.37 cubic yards for a 577 sq.ft.area.

Oh, sheesh, no! That's if it's a foot deep. Divide that number by three and you get 7.12 cubic yards.

Yes, go with the person who answered 7 cubic yards up there.
Dan is incorrect, Confused is correct. ".3 feet" is not the equivalent of 4". Four inches is 1/3 of a foot, not 3/10's of a foot!

In any case 7 yards of dirt, will probably end up filling at least an 8 yard dump truck, or 16 loads in a pickup truck. You have to allow for the expansion of that dirt when it is going from being compacted to aerated as you dig it up.
