I had to cut down a big ash tree within my front yard several weeks ago. A little sucker started growing subsequent to the stump a few days ago. Yesterday I had someone come within to remove the stump and when I was clearing up I found the little sucker broken rotten and am thinking, perhaps I could recover it? It was somewhat wilted after have been surrounded by the sun most of the day but I put it surrounded by some water second night and it is still alive so I'm wondering what I can do to comfort it survive and maybe grow big plenty to plant out somewhere else, so I ask.....
What sort of soil should I put it in?
Should I hold on to it just within water for a while?
Should i put any nutrients surrounded by the water? some sugar probably?
Is a sucker like this competent to survive and grow its own root system or is it likely to die after self separated from the host tree?
Any other advice?
Answers: dip the roots within rooting hormone first and then follow jax's warning
I would leave it within water for awhile, I don`t know add a small dose of a nutrient if you own any around your house and see if it sprouts roots. You are pretty much growing it hydroponically this way.
If it does start to root later I would plant it in top soil classified ad treat it like a regular house plant and if it continues to grow nourishing, plant it toward the end of summer.
